Freeze out winter troubles and keep your house cozy and safe in 10 simple steps you’ll love!

  1. Block Drafts: Inspect doors, windows and recessed lighting for cracks and drafts. Use caulking and weather stripping to seal any gaps and keep the cold outdoors, where it belongs.
  2. Replace Furnace Filters: Clean or switch out your furnace filters every 3 to 12 months, depending on filter thickness. And if your furnace is more than 10 years old, schedule an annual tune-up by a qualified HVAC technician.
  3. Install heated flooring: Heated flooring allows will keep your toes warm all winter long. This a luxury you deserve!
  4. Automate/ Voice Activated Thermostat: Replace older thermostats with a modern unit and set it to heat/ cool the house at pre-set temperatures.
  5. Heated Driveways: Heated driveways help to melt the snow and keep your drive and walkway safe for yourself and your guests.
  6. Test Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Stay safe by replacing your batteries bi-annually, in winter and spring.
  7. Use Humidifiers to Infuse Moisture: If you have a whole home humidifier, change the water panel a few times throughout the season. If you’re using a portable humidifier, clean each day and sanitize weekly – add essential oils to keep your home smelling beautiful.
  8. Prevent Pipes from Freezing: Wrap insulation around any exposed pipes near windows, doors and other areas of the home that are unheated to prevent water from freezing (and expanding), which can cause the pipes to burst.
  9. Do a Fireplace Safety Check: Before you use your wood burning fireplace, have it cleaned by a chimney sweep. And make sure to install a fireplace guard to prevent hot embers from getting out. If you don’t have a fireplace, think about investing in an electric one for increased ambiance and warmth!
  10. Consider a Generator: If you live in an area that is prone to power outages, a portable generator will help you keep the lights and heat on during prolonged winter outages.
